Land of Fires Dedication
The Land of Fires Nature Trail restoration project at Rocky Hill School is made possible by a generous gift from the family of Lu Eldredge. Donated in 2014 in honor and memory of alum Dr. Lucius “Lu” Eldredge, this funding has made it possible for Rocky Hill to continue the School’s commitment to marine and environmental education.
A Rhode Island native, Lu was born and attended school in East Greenwich. He graduated from Rocky Hill School in 1954. Upon graduating, Lu pursued his B.S. in zoology from University of Rhode Island. Afterwards, Lu continued his work in the life sciences at the University of Hawaii, earning his PhD in invertebrate zoology in 1965. Much of his work was dedicated to wildlife surveys in the South Pacific; he was well-known for his investigation of invasive species in the Pacific Islands.
Today, Lu’s passion for the sciences will continue on in support of environmental education at for Rocky Hill School for years to come. It is our privilege to have had such an accomplished scientist graduate from Rocky Hill School. The Land of Fires Nature Trail is dedicated in Lu Eldredge’s honor.
