Site 11a: Salt Water Pond
I am the daughter of Earth and Water,
And the nursling of the Sky;
I pass through the pores of the ocean
I change, but I cannot die.
Percy Bysshe Shelly - The Cloud
Site 11a sits right at a division between the western salt pond and the eastern salt pond. At low tides, a dry, rocky division keeps the two ponds separated. At high tide, water flows freely in and out of the ponds with the change in tides.
An unused osprey pole also stands to the left of the trail post at Site 11a. Why this nesting area is not used is unknown. Some have speculated that the post stands too close to athletic fields for osprey to chose this area to nest with so much school activity. The proximity to a second osprey pole, which is currently occupied to the east, might also account for this pole left empty.
